Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Dunetech Trading Design and Software ("Dunetech", "we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you visit our website (dunetech.games) or play our games (collectively, the "Services"), including War of Islands.
By using our Services you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information you provide directly
- Account information — display name, email address, password (hashed), date of birth, country.
- Pre-order & purchase information — name, billing address, payment method (processed by third-party processors; we do not store full card details).
- Communication — content of emails, support tickets, or community feedback you send us.
1.2 Information collected automatically
- Gameplay telemetry — actions, sessions, login times, in-game progression, device performance metrics.
- Technical data — IP address, browser type, operating system, device identifiers, crash reports.
- Cookies & analytics — strictly necessary cookies, analytics cookies (subject to your consent in supported regions).
1.3 Information from third parties
- If you sign in with Epic Games, Steam, or another platform, we receive a unique account identifier and basic profile information (display name, avatar) per that platform's API.
- Payment providers send us transaction status, but never your full payment credentials.
2. How War of Islands Handles Your Data
This section explains exactly what data War of Islands touches in each part of the game, why it’s needed, where it’s stored, and how long we keep it. If you only read one section, read this one.
2.1 Account & authentication
To play War of Islands you must sign in. We use Epic Online Services (EOS) as our identity backbone and accept the following sign-in methods:
- Epic Games account — we receive your Epic account ID, display name, and avatar from Epic.
- Steam — we receive your Steam ID and Steam display name.
- PlayStation Network — we receive your PSN online ID and account ID.
- Email + password (Dunetech account) — password is salted and hashed; we never store it in plain text.
We do not receive your platform password, full email-on-file (where the platform hides it), or payment information from these platforms.
2.2 Your sky-ocean coordinate
Each player in War of Islands is permanently assigned a unique coordinate in the shared sky-ocean. To enforce this, we store:
- Your assigned (x, y) coordinate linked to your account ID.
- The date your coordinate was claimed.
- Your home-island state (placement, structures, upgrades, defenses).
This data is required for the game to function — deleting it ends your character’s existence in the world.
2.3 Cloud saves & player profile (PlayFab)
We use PlayFab (Microsoft) to store your gameplay state in the cloud so it follows you across devices and platforms:
- Ship configurations, blueprints, and customizations.
- Inventory (resources, items, cosmetics, virtual currency balances).
- Captain level, skill points, unlocked abilities, mastery progress.
- Quest progress, achievements, and event participation.
- Cosmetic ownership records (skins, decals, founder rewards).
PlayFab data is encrypted at rest and in transit. We retain it for as long as your account is active.
2.4 Fog-of-war map
The world map in War of Islands reveals only as you fly through it. The set of map tiles you have personally discovered is stored in your account profile. We do not share your discovered map with other players. If you delete your account, the map data is deleted with it.
2.5 Multiplayer sessions & matchmaking
When you fly into shared territory or join a co-op session, your client connects to either Dunetech-hosted servers or peer relay sessions managed by EOS Sessions and EOS Lobbies. During a session we process:
- Your in-game position, ship state, and combat actions (transmitted to other players in the same session in real time, retained only for the duration of the session).
- Connection metadata (latency, region) used for matchmaking and quality-of-service.
- Your IP address — processed by EOS to route packets. In peer-to-peer encounters, EOS uses NAT-punching or relay; we attempt to route through relays so other players do not see your raw IP, but in peer-direct mode an IP may be exposed to the peer (this is standard for online games and disclosed here for transparency).
2.6 Voice & text chat
In-game chat (party, region, global) is delivered via EOS Voice and our chat service:
- Voice is transmitted in real time and is not recorded or stored by Dunetech by default. If you submit a player report involving voice, we may retain a short rolling buffer (up to 5 minutes) for moderation review, then delete it.
- Text chat is logged for up to 30 days for moderation, harassment review, and safety enforcement, then automatically deleted unless flagged in an active report.
You can mute or block any player at any time. Blocked-list relationships are stored on your account.
2.7 Anti-cheat
War of Islands uses Easy Anti-Cheat (Epic) at launch. To detect cheats, the anti-cheat service runs a kernel-level component on your device while the game is running, which:
- Reads memory of the game process and a limited set of system processes to detect tampering.
- Reports cheat-detection signals, hardware identifiers, and process metadata to Epic, who shares with us only the verdict (clean / flagged / banned).
- Stops running when you close the game.
The anti-cheat does not read personal documents, browsing data, passwords, or unrelated applications. Epic’s own privacy notice for EAC governs the anti-cheat data flow: easy.ac privacy.
2.8 Crash reports & diagnostics
If War of Islands crashes, the Unreal Engine Crash Reporter offers to send a crash dump to us. Crash reports include:
- Stack trace, engine state, and the last few seconds of game logs.
- Hardware specs (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS version).
- An anonymous machine identifier (no email or display name unless you opt to attach a description).
You can decline to send a crash report at the prompt. Sent crash reports are retained for up to 12 months and used solely for stability work.
2.9 Gameplay telemetry & balance metrics
To balance combat, economy, and progression, we collect aggregate event data: which abilities are used, how long sessions last, where players die, which islands are over- or under-visited, etc. Telemetry is tagged with your account ID for our own analysis but is aggregated and anonymized before being shared with anyone outside Dunetech (including in public dev blogs).
You can opt out of non-essential telemetry in Settings → Privacy at any time. Essential telemetry (anti-cheat signals, crash reports, transaction events) cannot be disabled while you are playing online.
2.10 Payments & in-game store
When you buy a pre-order tier, virtual currency, or a cosmetic, the transaction is processed by:
- Sadad — for users in our region, when integration is enabled.
- Steam — for purchases inside the Steam client.
- Sony PlayStation Store — for PS5 purchases.
- Standard card processors (Stripe or equivalent) — for direct web purchases on dunetech.games.
We receive transaction status (succeeded / failed), the amount, the SKU purchased, and a transaction ID. We never receive or store your full card number, CVV, or PIN. Refunds are handled per platform policy and our Terms.
2.11 Friends, leaderboards & social
The following information is visible to other players in War of Islands:
- Your display name and captain level.
- Your sky-ocean coordinate is visible to anyone who reaches it.
- Public leaderboard stats (kills, raids defended, distance flown) when you opt in to leaderboards.
- Cosmetic items equipped on your ship and home island.
The following is private and never shown to other players: email, IP, payment history, fog-of-war map, friend list (unless mutually friended), purchased-but-unequipped inventory.
2.12 Player reports, moderation & bans
When another player reports you (or you report someone), we keep a moderation case for up to 12 months containing the chat lines, in-game context, and decision. Banned accounts are flagged on our backend so the same email or platform ID cannot return; ban records are retained as long as legally permissible.
2.13 Children
War of Islands is rated for ages 13+ in most regions, 16+ in others. We do not knowingly create accounts for children below the age threshold. See section 8 below for our broader children-and-privacy approach.
